Attitude and communication skills of German medical students

While the development of communication competencies in medical schools plays a pivotal role in the curriculum, studies show that students' communication skills and patient-centred attitudes may vary based on gender and ethnicity. The goal of this study was to investigate the socio-demographic factors that influence medical students' communication abilities and, more specifically, to what extent their attitude toward communication skills learning and patient orientation associate with communication abilities.

Patients’ perspective on supposedly patient-relevant process and outcome parameters: a cross-sectional survey within the ‘PRO patients study’

Patient-centered care implies that patients, their values, preferences, and individual life and health goals are at the heart of care processes and that patients are involved in care decisions. To be able to make informed choices based on their individual preferences, patients need to be adequately informed about treatment options and their potential outcomes. This implies that studies measure the effects of care based on parameters that are relevant to patients. In a previous scoping review, we found a wide variety of supposedly patient-relevant parameters that equally addressed processes and outcomes of care.

The PanCareFollowUp Care Intervention : A European harmonised approach to person-centred guideline-based survivorship care after childhood, adolescent and young adult cancer

Long-term follow-up (LTFU) care, although endorsed, is not available for the majority of adult survivors of childhood, adolescence and young adult (CAYA) cancer. Barriers to implementation include lack of time, knowledge, personnel and funding. Sustainable solutions are urgently needed to address the needs of CAYA cancer survivors to improve the quality of life and reduce the burden of late effects on survivors, health care systems and society. The European Union–funded PanCareFollowUp project, initiated by the Pan-European Network for Care of Survivors after Childhood and Adolescent Cancer, was established to facilitate the implementation of person-centred survivorship care across Europe.

Effects of a person-centred and health-promoting intervention in home care services- a non-randomized controlled trial

Home care recipients have reported little self-determination and opportunity to influence their own care. Person-centred care focusing on involvement has improved the quality of life of older adults in health care and nursing homes; however, knowledge about the effects of person-centred interventions in aged care at home is sparse. The aim of this study was to study the effects of a person-centred and health-promoting intervention, compared with usual care, on health-related quality of life, thriving and self-determination among older adults, and on job satisfaction, stress of conscience and level of person-centred care among care staff.

We need to prepare ahead of time so that nurses have optimal organisational prerequisites to be able to work in accordance with person-centred practice, also during pandemics and other crisis, which means to be able to give nursing care in accordance with the ill person's needs and resources.

Associations between person-centred care and job strain, stress of conscience, and intent to leave among hospital personnel

Hospitals have experienced difficulty in retaining qualified healthcare personnel. Previous studies have shown that working in a person-centred environment could offset this challenge, but research is scarce. The organisational and environmental support subscale of perceived PCC showed significant correlations with all explanatory variables, while the extent of personalising care subscale only correlated with job strain and intent to leave. Higher perceived PCC is associated with work-related factors in hospital departments.

Short Communication: Opportunities and Challenges for Early Person-Centered Care for Older Patients in Emergency Settings

The provision of person-centered care (PCC) for older adults in emergency settings is important. This short communication explores the complexity of providing comprehensive PCC for older adults in emergency settings, based on a synthesis of existing literature and empirical data from a small-scale case study on the potential of improving patient engagement in a Danish emergency department (ED). Our findings highlight overall positive attitudes towards PCC, as patient engagement is perceived as important and feasible during the waiting hours that older patients experience.

Care Integration in Primary Dementia Care Networks: A Longitudinal Mixed-Methods Study

Currently, care integration for community-dwelling persons with dementia is poor and knowledge on how to effectively facilitate development of integrated dementia care is lacking. The DementiaNet program aims to overcome this with a focus on interprofessional collaboration. The DementiaNet approach enables a transition towards more mature networks. Identified success factors provide better understanding of how network maturity can be achieved and gives guidance to future care integration strategies.
