Launch of the Primary Health Care Case Study Compendium

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Primary Health Care Case Study Compendium by the World Health Organization (WHO). Presented by Faraz Khalid during the joint side-event at the 77th World Health Assembly (#WHA77), this compendium is a significant resource for enhancing access to primary health care (PHC) country case studies globally.

The compendium aims to provide an easy-to-access repository of PHC case studies from various countries, showcasing successful practices and innovations in primary health care. It serves as a valuable tool for healthcare practitioners, policymakers, and researchers, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and promoting the adoption of best practices in PHC worldwide.

Explore the Primary Health Care Case Study Compendium and discover how different countries are advancing their primary health care systems. Join us in utilizing this resource to drive improvements and foster innovation in PHC globally.

The Andalusian School of Public Health, as a WHO Collaborating Centre on Primary Health Care, will assist in identifying content for the compendium. Additionally, we will promote and disseminate the compendium through our website, social media platforms, and professional networks.

Perspectives for Primary Health Care public policy in South America

A recent study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the implementation of Primary Health Care (PHC) in nine South American countries. The analysis focuses on three key dimensions: political commitment, leadership, and governance; care model; and engagement of communities and other stakeholders.

The findings reveal a formal commitment to placing PHC at the heart of efforts to achieve universal access. Observations include revitalization processes in public subsystems, ensuring preventive, promotional, curative, and rehabilitation actions; PHC as a gatekeeper; an emphasis on family and community; designated population and territory; multidisciplinary teams; and, in some cases, a focus on interculturality through the concept of “buen vivir” (good living).

However, PHC revitalization processes have been affected by political changes, with segmentation of coverage persisting amidst progress and setbacks. Sharing experiences from different countries can contribute to developing a comprehensive, integrated, and quality approach to PHC in the region.

Webinar on Tools and Practices to Operationalize the Primary Health Care Approach

Five years ago, the World Conference on Primary Health Care held in Astana and the resolution WHA72.2 initiated a phase of conceptual and practical renewal of Primary Health Care (PHC). This led to the updating of technical cooperation from both the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and strategic stakeholders in the region of the Americas.

The Operational Framework for PHC, published by WHO in 2021, proposed 14 mechanisms necessary to transform the global and regional commitments of the Declaration of Astana into concrete actions and interventions. These efforts aim to accelerate progress in strengthening systems oriented towards primary health care and, ultimately, to achieve demonstrable improvements in achieving the goal of health for all.

The implementation of policies and actions at the territorial level is also a focus of the Alliance for Primary Health Care in the Americas (A4PHC), a collaboration between PAHO/WHO, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the World Bank Group (WB) launched in December 2023. This partnership aims to transform health systems with a focus on PHC.

This Webinar series on Primary Health Care with a territorial perspective will highlight these tools and their uses in the region, particularly in the context of Integrated Health Services Delivery Networks.

Professor Sergio Minué from the Andalusian School of Public Health (EASP) participated in this informative webinar in which he described the contribution of the EASP, as a WHO Collaborating Centre on Primary Health Care, to the knowledge, dissemination, and implementation of the operational framework for PHC and performance indicators."

Event Recap: International Symposium on Transforming Primary Health Care

We are pleased to remind you that the international symposium "Transforming Primary Health Care: from Spain to Europe," is available online. This event highlighted the pivotal role of Primary Health Care (PHC) as the principal interface between health systems and communities, emphasizing how PHC shapes and reshapes health systems to be more accessible, integrated, and sustainable.

The symposium brought together health stakeholders and PHC enthusiasts from Spain and Europe to present two key publications coordinated by Spain's Ministry of Health, WHO, and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies:

  1. In-depth Case Study on PHC in Spain: This study showcased Spain's decades-long investment in a PHC-oriented health system, offering valuable lessons for other European countries.

  2. Global Study on PHC: This publication analyzed current evidence on PHC initiatives and implementation efforts worldwide, providing insights into best practices in PHC governance, financing, workforce, medicines, infrastructure, and digital technologies.

These publications framed a round table discussion with policy-makers and experts from across Europe, reflecting on how to transform European health systems towards more holistic, people-centred care.

The platform aims to facilitate the exchange of experiences between countries, creating spaces for discussions on implementing transformative changes in healthcare systems.

The Andalusian School of Public Health (EASP), as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Primary Health Care, was invited by this international organization to participate in the launch of the Primary Health Care Demonstration Platform in Spain. Professor Sergio Minué Lorenzo, coordinator of the WHO Collaborating Centre at EASP, represented the institution.

During the presentation at the Ministry of Health, a special edition of the ‘Let’s Talk’ interview program was held, providing expert perspectives on Primary Health Care and its implications for healthcare practice. Professor Minué linked his contributions to the role EASP is playing in developing reforms aimed at strengthening PHC in Latin American countries.
