Key role of governance and accountability to achieve integrated people-centred health services

Models of integrated care continue to evolve globally with the goal to deliver more integrated people-centred health services. These models are characterized by innovative collaborations and partnerships across sectors. One enduring question relates to the best governance structures for these complex, multi-player systems and networks. Governance encompasses all aspects of managing health services delivery to support health system goals, including financing, human resources, and technology, and it is a critical instrument to strengthen public and institutional performance.

The current pandemic is a good reminder that circumstances and environments strongly influence health and well-being. It emphasizes the need to focus on whole-systems health, which cuts across political, economic, and social landscapes. Leadership in integrated care networks: A literature review and opportunities for future research

This article reviews research on leadership in integrated care networks. It is timely as scholars and policy makers regard integrated care as a key part in reforming healthcare systems to cope with demographic aging, the rising prevalence of chronic diseases and the growing demand for long-term care.

In many countries, elderly patients with chronic conditions require a web of services delivered by several providers collaborating in inter-organisational networks. In view of their global importance, it is surprising how little we know how these networks are led. Like traditional organisations, networks require leadership to function effectively. This paper reviews central characteristics of leadership in integrated care networks and proposes opportunities for future research.

In this article, 73 studies published in the main academic journals are analyzed. This article consolidates the research on means, practices, activities and results of leadership, covering the levels of analysis of networks, policies and organizations.

How to Ensure Referral and Uptake for COPD Rehabilitation – Part 2: A Case of Integrated Care on How to Translate Findings of Cross- Sectorial Workflow to Improve Cross-Sectorial Rehabilitation

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can greatly benefit from rehabilitation initiatives, but referral to rehabilitation is sparse. Before we initiated activities to ensure hospital referrals for prevention initiatives at the municipality, we investigated referral patterns and relevant factors in the cross-sectorial workflow.

This study aims to ensure referral to municipality COPD rehabilitation, by simplifying the referral procedures, and by facilitating relational coordination across the two health care settings.

Balancing Pragmatism and Sustainability: A Case Study of an Interorganisational Network to Improve Integrated Care for the Elderly

Networks constitute a promising strategy for interorganisational collaboration, but may fail due to network tensions. By investigating the activities and internal dynamics of a voluntary meso-level network operating in the intersection of health and social care, this study aims to enhance the understanding of the relationship between pragmatism and sustainability and the role network governance plays in this respect.

The introduction of orthopaedic networks offers the potential for methodological advantages with clinical services, research, and academia under one quality improvement umbrella. Networked and partnership working could create a culture of research and innovation, increasing patient accessibility to research trials and advanced orthopaedic interventions, and contributing to improvement in quality of care and outcomes.

Decision-Making Dilemmas within Integrated Care Service Networks: A Systematic Literature Review

The diverse nature of people’s care needs requires collaboration between different organisations and sectors. One way of achieving such collaboration is through integrated care service networks. Decision-making is considered an important aspect of network governance and key to achieve further integration of care services. As integrated care scholars only implicitly seem to touch upon the issue of decision-making, we aimed to identify multiple decision-making dilemmas.
