The Observatory Venice Summer School 2016 is a one week intensive course aimed at senior and mid level policy makers, civil servants and professionals steering primary care services and those looking at strengthening care, its continuity and integrative functions within and beyond the health system.

Impact of Patient-Centered Care Innovations on Access to Providers, Ambulatory Care Utilization, and Patient Clinical Indicators in the Veterans Health Administration

The Veterans Health Administration piloted patient-centered care (PCC) innovations beginning in 2010 to improve patient and provider experience and environment in ambulatory care. We use secondary data to look at longitudinal trends, evaluate system redesign, and identify areas for further quality improvement.

METHODS:

This was a retrospective, observational study using existing secondary data from multiple US Department of Veteran Affairs sources to evaluate changes in veteran and facility outcomes associated with PCC innovations at 2 innovation and matched comparison sites between FY 2008-2010 (pre-PCC innovations) and FY 2011-2012 (post-PCC innovations). Outcomes included access to primary care providers (PCPs); primary, specialty, and emergency care use; and clinical indicators for chronic disease.

RESULTS:

Longitudinal trends revealed a different story at each site. One site demonstrated better PCP access, decrease in emergency and primary care use, increase in specialty care use, and improvement in diabetic glucose control. The other site demonstrated a decrease ...

Study tours offer a unique opportunity to meet integrated care pioneers in their natural environment and to experience and learn about integrated care practices from national and regional innovations. They are designed to support clinicians, managers and policy-makers with an interest and responsibility in the successful adoption of integrated care in policy and practice. Designed to be live case studies, the study visits offer the possibility to discuss regional and country-level strategies with the responsible decision makers, assess the barriers, facilitators and key drivers for integrated care at a regional and local level and reflect upon the transferability of lessons learned in moderated discussions and workshops.

Health system innovations: adapting to rapid change

A fundamental challenge for health systems is the need to adapt to changes in the patterns of health service need, scientific and technological developments, and the economic and institutional contexts within which providers of health services are embedded. This is especially true of many low and middle-income countries, where the pace of multiple and interconnected changes is breath-taking. 

Impact assessment of Iran’s health technology assessment programme

The present article aims to introduce an integrative RIH framework drawing on the RRI literature, the international literature on health systems as well as specific bodies of knowledge that shed light on key dimensions of health innovations. Combining inductive and deductive theory-building strategies and concomitant with the development of a formal tool to assess the responsibility of innovations, it developed a framework that is comprised of nine dimensions organised within five value domains, namely population health, health system, economic, organisational and environmental. RIH provides health and innovation policy-makers with a common framework that supports the development of innovations that can tackle significant system-level challenges, including sustainability and equity.

Future of Digital Health Systems in the European Region

The WHO Symposium on the Future of Digital Health Systems in the European Region will bring together evidence and experience to show how governments and organizations can adopt digital health to reduce inequalities and improve the health and well-being of populations.

Global COVID-19 Pandemic Response and Impact Grant (Global Co-RIG)

The Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine (Besrour Centre) at the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), thanks to the generous support of the CFPC’s Foundation for the Advancement of Family Medicine (FAFM) and the Fondation Docteur Sadok Besrour, is seeking proposals for a Global COVID-19 pandemic innovation response.

The initiative is a response to how the COVID-19 pandemic is disrupting the health and economic well-being of nations. There are more than six million cases, and more than 370,000 deaths, worldwide.

* The response to such a threat must be rapid and effective to minimize the harmful impact of a virus that is highly transmissible and that is affecting the most vulnerable worldwide. The primary care response to COVID-19 must support innovation that targets and protects highly vulnerable populations that lack access to primary care.

Integrated care with digital health innovation: pressing challenges

Digital health care has emerged as one of the most important means to deliver integrated care by care providers in recent years. As the use of digital health increases, there are some pressing issues such as interoperability of data across different healthcare information systems, regulatory environment and security and privacy of patient’s information which need to be discussed and addressed in order to reduce information silos and to ensure efficient and seamless use of digital health technologies.
